Krangkarussell - 'Sonnentanz (Sun Don't Shine ft. will Heard)' (2013)

It's starting to get greyer, wetter and darker for longer. I am desperately wringing out every last drop of the summer like a wet hanky. The other morning at work, it was 5am and it was a colleague's birthday. In her time she used to frequent clubs working as a holiday rep in Greece so we collectively decided to put on something upbeat on the radio. We stopped on Gaydio. I was impressed with the choices of remixes and although not quite appropriate for the quiet time that should be before dawn, we managed to turn the office into something out of Manumission from Ibiza. This song instantly stood out for me but where was it months ago during the heatwave?! Klangkarussell (Sound Carousel) are an Austrian electronic dance duo and have firmly put themselves on the map with this single released in August. It reminds me a little of Toni Di Bart's 'The Real Thing' in it's mood. I can just see it now, clubbers dancing on the beach during sunset for the closing of the summer season in Ibiza....a perfect end to a great dance collection for 2013.

London based singer/songwriter KHUSHI just released this video for his upcoming single Magpie. This track was self-produced in his (bedroom) studio and has is available through his Soundcloud page.  It's catchy indie pop and the video is great - anyone who has ever had a drink in a working mens club will smile!

Larry Gus - 'Night Patrols (A Man Asleep) (2013)

Weee-ird, I love it....! This track wouldn't go a miss in the spice scented souk of Marrakech or maybe I'm hallucinating I'm so tired. Larry Gus is the moniker of Milan based Greek producer, specialising in splicing up different samples and beats, creating some pretty psychedelic sounds. Night Patrols is taken from his new album, Years Not Living, out on DFA records last month. As for the video, finally a club where you can 'dad dance' in confidence, I feel liberated, I'm in! Opa!

The Deep Dark Woods - Charlie's (is coming down) (2012)

 

I was please to find that Canadian Group  The Deep Dark Woods  which I featured last year, have a new album  Jubilee  released next week. I thought I would try and find some tracks from that album, but sadly I could not. However I came across this little gem and I can't stop playing it. It has got that sort of melody that creeps up on you and when all theses guys voices are together, well it is just a joy!

I will be checking out the new album on Monday.

MGMT - 'Your Life Is A Lie' (2013)

When MGMT first came to my attention in 2008 I was all over them. Their album Oracular Spectacular was one of my albums of the year. Unfortunately after hearing 'Kids' for about the 7000th time on the radio I started to go off them a bit. Their follow up album didn't set off any fireworks for me and I half expected to never hear from them again, apart from the still almost daily radio play of 'Kids'. That's why I'm probably a bit late in finding this track, it was released in August and is 2 minutes of upbeat pleasure. It's from their self titled 3rd studio album which came out a couple of weeks ago. I don't think it's as commercial as the singles off of their 1st album but I'm happy with that otherwise I'd probably end up disliking this as well. I'll give this album more time than I allowed their sophomore release and maybe I'll even give that another try.

ALAN PRICE - To Ramona (1968)

Here we have 2 stalwarts of the sixties UK scene, both with versions of one of my favourite Dylan tracks To Ramona.

First up is Alan Price from the Animals who recorded this version of To Ramona in 1968 and it appeard on his Album A Price on his Head (1968). You can see above Alan and Bob on a clip from Don'Look Back.  I think thery are sharing a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale.

STEVE MARRIOTT - To Ramona (2010)

Second up is Steve Marriott who was famous for his part in the Small Faces, The Faces and Humble Pie. His take can be found on the album Lend us a Quid (2010). This was apparently a rejected solo album from the seventies.

Desert Blues Playlist Vol.1

...she's gone and left you for that Tuareg bloke with the bigger oasis. With the incessant sun, a hanky for a hat, the desert wind in your face and mouthful of sand...it looks like you have a case of the Desert Blues.

The Desert Blues is without doubt my favourite of all the African musical genres, from the Tuareg rebel music of Tinariwen and Terakaft to the 'Ambassador of the African Blues', Ali Farka Toure. With it's laid back hypnotic rhythms, hand claps, intricate guitar playing (of which you'll be hard pushed to hear any better) and the ululations of the female backing singers, it never fails to capture my imagination. (Sometimes, if it's recorded outside you may even hear the sound of crickets joining in). It's pure atmosphere, evoking feelings of distant barren landscapes, in which you can almost feel/see the heat shimmering over the dunes. Hang on, who's that coming over that ridge over there? Why it's Omar Sharif, oh no, not another mirage.

1) Tinariwen - Tenhert (2009) - Imidiwan

The Hendrix of the dunes, the Santana of the sand whatever tag Northern Mali's Tinariwen are given, these guys are the without doubt the undisputed desert heavyweights. The first Desert Blues group to enjoy commercial success and along with Ali Farka Toure the first band that really got me into the genre.

2) Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba - Kele Magni (2013) - Jama Ko

This cat can play! One of my favourite tracks off his third album, as it showcases his skills. Another musician from the musically rich Mali.

3) Samba Toure - Ago Djamba (2013) - Albala

Samba Toure is my new Malian Blues hero. The brilliant 'Ago Djamba' is taken from his third album, Albala, it's fairly sombre stuff as it recalls Mali's recent turmoil. Essential listening.

4) Robert Plant - Win My Train Fare Home (2003) - Le Festival du Desert

You can't argue with Robert Plant, he's been championing the Desert Blues for as long as I know. This track is simply sensational, it's taken from the Festival Du Desert compilation, a yearly music festival held in the outskirts of Timbuktu. Atmospheric

5) Terakaft - Awa Adounia (2012) - Kel Tamasheq

Similar to fellow Malian's Tinariwen, probably because they have two original members of that band but their sound is a lot more vibrant. 'Awa Adounia', is the stand out track of last years Kel Tamasheq.

6) Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara - Fulani Coochie Man (2009) - Tell No Lies

Justin Adams has collaborated with many African Blues artists also producing albums for Tinariwen and Robert Plant. An accomplished British guitarist, he joined up with Gambian Griot player, Juldeh Camara on 2009's, Tell No Lies album. 'Fulani Coochie Man', unmistakeably the blues, with a Gambian twist.

7) Ali Farka Toure - Ledi Coumbe (2006) - Savane

What can you say about the late great Ali Farka Toure, he's the desert don. Martin Scorsese is quoted as saying that Toure's musical tradition constitutes the "DNA of the Blues". The posthumously released Savane is a fantastic album with a plethora of tracks to choose from but I feel 'Ledi Coumbe' is African Blues magic.

8) Tartit - Ansari (2006) - Abacabok

Another Malian Desert Blues Band but with a predominately female line up. The women will normally play more traditional instruments, hand claps and sing 'call and response' type songs to the men's electric guitars. What strikes me with them is that some tracks on the Abacabok album cut into vocal jams that sound like they have and will go on for ages. It's very trancy and if you add a beat to it, you could easily thorw a few shapes to it on the dancefloor on a Saturday night.

9) Tamikrest - Achaka Achail Aynaian Daghchilan (2013) - Chatma

This is taken from the Tuareg band's latest album, Chatma. A lot more percussive and 'rockier' than their Malian counterparts but here you find them perhaps more reflective. An atmospheric track that does sound like the desert wind.

10) Boubacar Traore - Mali Denhou (2011) - Mali Denhou

Definitely something in the water in Mali, a fantastic track that sounds like it's straight out of the Mississippi Delta. I love this track, which I heard on a random sampler, it's the simple guitar with the harmonica accompaniment. Just one of those gems you probably wouldn't normally come across.

11) Amadou & Mariam - Mouna (1999) - Sou Ni Tile

The first time I heard Amadou & Mariam was on the Manu Chao produced Dimanche a Bamako, it got my attention immediately and as a result they have become one of my favourite African artists. The beautiful 'Mouna' is taken from the "the blind couple from Mali's" first international release, Sou Ni Tile.

12) Bombino - Iyat Idounia Ayashen (2011) - Agadez

Hailing from Niger, Bombino's main influences came from watching VHS tapes of Hendrix and Mark Knophler! This track is taken from his second album Agadez, with some mesmerising guitar work you won't care that it's 9 minutes long, you won't want it to end.

JOAN BAEZ - To Bobby(1972)

Here we have two songs by Joan Baez about her once time lover, Bob Dylan. Both are excellent from Joan  even though she's not known for her song writing. The first one is probably a little naive and it asks Dylan to come back and lead 'The Movement' through his songs to save the ills of the world. Nice thoughts Joan, but it was never going to happen. Second up is the fabulous Diamonds and Rust where Joan reminisces about their relationship, what it meant and what it still means. There is no doubt about it Joan really did love the 'Original Vagabond' that is clear.

If you get the chance, read the book, Positively 4th Street, as it deals with the relationship between Bob and Joan, as well as her sister Mimi and husband Richard Farina. It's a brilliant read and contains some great unseen personal photos.

Chicago's Califone have been been making music since the late 90's and have recently released Stitches, their 7th Album. Singer Tim Rutili started Califone as a solo project, then over the years its become more of a collective.  Contributors to Stitches include Eric Heywood(Son Volt, Calexico, Richard Buckner), Joe Westerlund(Megafaun), Stella Mozgowa (Warpaint) and a plethora of others.

Movie Music Kills A Kiss is the albums opener and is a must listen for fans of Wilco, Iron & Wine.  It's my current must play and you can check out more tracks through their label, Dead Ocean.

The irony there'll be no "killing kisses" with this track,  It would go perfectly with a bottle of vino, olive oil and fluffy handcuffs.

For me, it was always The Beatles over the Stones. As a kid I listened to all their albums over-and-over again and when I was at music college I documented a large number of their songs to music score - which included every drum beat, tambourine shake and clap. You could say I liked them. When I heard that Macca had recorded with Giles Martin, Mark Ronson, Paul Epworth and Ethan Johns I was intrigued. "Please be good", "Please be good".  It's not good...it's bloody great!!! Welcome back Sir Paul!

Summer Camp - 'Fresh' (2013)

If you need a theme tune for an Indian summer, look no further. You can't beat a bit of Disco and the camper it is the better, I don't quite know what this says about me but that hardly matters as Summer Camp's nostalgic, 'Fresh', brushes shoulders with Daft Punk and Holy Ghost in this years Disco club. It's a bittersweet track, which recalls fond and heady memories of 'the first time' (which incidentally for me, was a disaster) before trying desperately trying to forget all about it as you nurse a broken heart (also a disaster). Summer camp are a London Girl/ Boy duo and 'Fresh' is taken from their second and self titled album out on Moshi Moshi records.

The Temperance Movement - Only Friend (2013)

 

Just for you, some old school no nonsence rock. This is a throw back to the 60s and 70s, when guitar heroes and gravelly voiced long haired boys, ruled the airwaves.

Here we have Glasgow's very own The Temperance Movement with a track from their self titled debut album. If you are in the right mood this hits the right spot. I just love this guys voice, a great riff and just a hint of swagger. They just might make it big.

Korn - 'Never Never' (2013)

Time for a bit of rawk refreshment I thought and flicked onto Kerrang radio at work last week. I instantly recognised Jonathan Davis' screechy voice but was trying to wrack my brain as to the song title. When it came up I realised it was new to me. Blimey, these guys are still rocking even now! Responsible for one of my fave all time tracks, Freak On A Leash, I became heavily into Korn from 1998 onwards. They had such a unique style of metal mixed with a thrilling bit of slap bass every now and then. This single, released in August marks the arrival of their 11th(!) studio album and the return of former band member Brian Welch fondly nicknamed "Head". I'm thinking about kicking back to the old school with my old baggy jeans with chain, dog colar and black hair dye as I will happily "dress the part" for my Korn revival!

Coldplay - Atlas' (2013)



I know I shouldn't be surprised, but they've gone and bloody well done it again. Coldplay have an amazing knack for coming out with great track after countless great track. Try as I might, I can't remember a song they have either released or even an album track that I haven't thought "Yeah, I like it" I remember Old Pa, once saying they were the band you want to hate but can't !!

This track was written specifically for the new Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie. It starts off slowly on the piano as some of their better tracks have and builds into great pop song.

Yep, they've got me again.

This week we have A Eurovision Song Contest Special, here are three Babes who represented Great Britain in this hideous competition. Saying that, when I was a kid in the 50's and early 60's I used to love the show and it was always a highlight. 

Well ffolks, it goes to show there is life after Eurovision.

First up is Lulu, the mighty lass from Glasgow, with her rendition of the  Mighty Quinn, bad, but I have heard worse.  Her Eurovision effort was Boom Bang-a-Bang which won in 1969. Nothing to Shout about.

Next for scrutiny is Sandy Shaw singing a pretty good Lay Lady Lay. Her Eurovision song was the ghastly Puppet on a String which won the contest in 1967.

Finally we have Olivia Neutron Bomb the Aussie bombshell. Who can forget these tight black satin leggings she wore as Sandy. Her Euro song was Long Live Love which was 4th in 1974. Here she sings a boring cover of  If Not For You.

Finally we have an added bonus of possibly the worst Dylan cover ever and I mean that. There have been some horrible covers and I have featured some in the past, but this takes a lot of beating. The whole disaster is almost saved by the fabulous pink tight number warn by Lulu.

After the relative success of my encroachment onto Old Pa's territory a few weeks back, I thought I would now step on Flycasual's toes and share with you a cover of a classic track that brings back childhood memories. What song takes you back to your childhood ??

Do you remember your first crush ??? I do, her name was Trisha Yates and she was Tucker Jenkins arch-nemisis in Grange Hill.... Tucker was my hero cos of his cheeky grin and backchat to the teachers. Everyone wanted to be like him... And yet the girl that never took any crap from him was the girl of my dreams... I should have hated her but I couldn't. She wasn't a classic beauty but as an 8 year old boy I wasn't into looks... She was famous and I dreamed of being her boyfriend, I knew it could work... It didn't.

When I realised that this romance would never happen I went quickly onto my next crush, surely I'd have more luck with this one. Debbie Harry was sexy, even though I didn't really know what sexy meant. I read it somewhere and so she became the object of my affections. At the time we were living on an Army camp in Hounslow and my Mum worked in the NAAFI bar on the camp, during the school holidays my brother and I would hang out there playing Space Invaders and listening to the jukebox. One of my Dad's many responsibilities (he was the storeman for his regiment) was that of restocking the jukebox in the NAAFI bar. Every now and then he would bring home some of the records that had been removed from the jukebox and my brother and I would fight over them. This one particular day my Dad brought a few 7 inches home and I took a sneaky peek before he offered them to us. Usually my brother would get first dibs as he was older by 3 years, but this occasion I asked him if I could choose first. Obviously he said no, so I begged him and said he could have all the records if I could choose the first one. Thinking he was onto a winner he agreed... Haha sucker !!! I got my way and chose this particular track, I don't remember what he got but who cares. I got a Blondie record, even now 30 plus years later I can still picture the blue and white label on the vinyl with a small butterfly at the bottom. If I'd had a Top 20 of the year like I do now, that would have been in the Top 1 no doubt.

Last week, Shellhunter and I were at the French/Caribbean restaurant in our hotel here in Montego Bay, Jamaica and a band started playing a few reggae style instrumentals. They played a few classics and some Boney M songs too !!! Then they played The Tide is High... It took me back to 1980 again and Debbie Harry, then to Trisha Yates..

NERD ALERT - Trisha Yates came back in the very last episode of Tucker's Luck.... and went on a date with Tucker himself !!

After a week in the South of France, I'm back with a bump.  The weathers blustery and the hangover has truly begun (Lots of wine was drunk) and it's a bit apt that I've picked this.  It features on Billy Bragg's 2013 album Tooth and Nail. It's all very Alt-Country and I like it very much.

I'm in a very reflective mood and wish I was still sitting by the pool and sipping the vino.  So while I ponder the universe and all that, it's nice to think that I'm on Billy's wave length. I know nothing.

George Ezra - Budapest (2013)



I saw George live at the Thekla back in March and was blown away by this baby faced assassin. His music is a nod in the direction of Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie but his raw, emotive voice gets the ladies swooning. He's only released a couple of tracks but is touring in the UK in September & October and I highly recommend you catching him near you in the next few weeks - trust me, I'm a Doctor!

Tirzah - 'Inside Out' (2013)

This was a bit like an intravenous hit, well sort of, it instantly got my attention when I first heard it on a Ninja Tunes staff picks playlist (try saying that after a few) on Spotify. A brilliant track that starts off with a sinister like industrial beat which is at once softened by Tirzah's soothing voice, the warped synths just add to the fun. Tirzah is the protege and school pal of Micachu (Michacu and the Shapes) who produced the impressive I'm Not Dancing EP from which 'Inside Out' is taken. We'll be hearing more from her fo sho'...

Richard Buckner - When You Tell Me How It Is (2013)

 

I have not listened to too much music this week (you know, things to do and all that)  so when it came to do TOTW, I felt it would be a bit of a struggle, then I remember liking a track by Richard Buckner which I had heard earlier in the week.  I checked it out again and was hooked. It is a hard one to pin down. There are elements of folk, elements of Mexicana, elements of rock. Oh! well Americana fits the bill then, Good enough for me.

I for one will be checking out his new album  'Surrounded' (2013). This is good stuff.

Cut Copy - 'Let Me Show You Love' (2013)

I read that the Aussie 4 piece will be returning with their forth album in November later this year and thought, yikes, I must have missed a single somewhere! Sure enough this was released back in June and it is really growing on me in a big way even though the video is a bit sickly. From its Public Enemy siren at the very start, to its Friendly Fires meets 808 State electro funk. Listen out for the "Go, Go, Go" in the background which kicks in around the 4.30 mark, it reminds me of an American talk show like Ricky Lake or Jerry Springer! Be sure to catch the guys on their tour this year, visiting London Bethnal Green's Oval Space on November 26th. See you at the Bar!

Wilko Johnson is probably more famous for his part in the great British Pub Rock Band  Dr Feelgood  but he also had a  long and succsessful solo career too. I was very pleased to find five Dylan Covers by Wilko.

Here is the first of two, it is a take on  Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window  and can be found on the Japanese released LP  Ice on the Motorway (1980). The second is  Highway 61 Revisited  and that one is just tailor made for Mr Johnson. This one can be found on the CD Solid Senders (1978)

The Mouse Outfit - 'Sit Back' feat Truthos Mufasa and Black Josh (2013)

The Mouse Outfit made a crusty old B-boy very happy this week, rekindling memories of Golden Age Hip Hop. These tracks instantly reminded me of two of my favourite Rap groups of the early 90's, American West Coaster's, The Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief, with their laid back delivery, humour and use of Jazz instrumentation.

Except that the 10 piece Mouse Outfit hail out of Manchester and are one of the UK's premier Hip Hop troupes, blending Funk, Jazz and Classic Hip Hop. I've been really impressed with their new album, Escape Music, which features a range of UK talent including Hip Hop stalwart Dr Syntax and newcomers, Sparkz.....seriously fresh!

We found a hotel in downtown Singapore it had the dubious name of the Cockpit Inn, but it seemed pretty good. (That reminded me of the Gay Pub in Staines, called the 'Cock Inn', simply brilliant).

We decided to just enjoy ourselves as we were here and decided to have a few drink and a nice meal somewhere and start to worry tomorrow. I remember well being in a piano bar and their theme was, we play any request. Joy Division's Atrocity Exhibition sorted that one out very sharpish.

I made contacted with my Bosses in Saudi and they were not best pleased, but they did say they would arrange that I would get a seat on Monday's plane.

'I'm in trouble'

We switched the TV on the room and I was delighted to see the Masters was on and my man Sandy Lyle was in contention. I would be able to watch the last round on Sunday night, I was beginning to relax, in fact enjoy myself.
We planned next day to visit Raffles, the famous Hotel and then visit the world famous Food courts. A great day out was planned and to top it all we had the final round of the Masters to watch.

It was striking how clean Singapore was, but it was very hot and the humidly was as bad as I have ever experienced.

We had an excellent day that Sunday, the shopping was fabulous and I remember buying a Sony Walkman at a superb price. The food Courts were busy and bustling, the food was sensational and like Hong Kong, the Chinese influenced food was nothing like the bland U.K versions.

We returned to the Hotel exhausted but satisfied, it was a great but unexpected day. We switched on the TV, Sandy was still in there, it was all very tense. He got a late birdie to bring him level, there was one hole to go.

Sandy required a birdie to win or a par for a playoff.

He drove the ball, disaster it went straight into the bunker, Sandy had blown it, I thought.

Sandy squared up took a swing  and the ball sailed to the middle of the green, it stopped and started to move again and got closer to the hole. Sandy had quite a long putt for the win. The putt rolled to the hole, I was silent the crowd were silent, the ball turned at the last few inches and into the hole and dropped.

'Sandy has won the Masters I screamed'

I jumped up on the bed, up and down screaming and then fell off onto the bedside table smashing it to several pieces. I didn't care, Sandy was the Masters Champion and I had a great time in Singapore.

Strange and somber with a heavy off kilter Hip Hop beat that the Wu Tang Clan would be proud of, this is a track that has given me a serious dose of aural pleasure this week. 'Neptune Estate' is taken from the talented 19 year old Londoner's debut album, 6ft Beneath the Moon. He reminds me a bit of Tom Waits in his vocal delivery while Q Magazine hail him as "a post Dubstep Billy Bragg", which certainly makes for interesting listening.

This is not a new song but it is from a 2013 compilation by Scratchylus - Reset the Mindset. It really is Scratchylus and Friends. There is some great stuff on this and I still have not completed listening to it all. I keep going back to favourites but I am loving it all. I have chosen  'I hear the Children Cry'  but I keep getting a new favourite the deeper I get into this. Essential.

Ever since I heard the 2003 Yeah Yeah Yeahs track, Maps, I've been a fan/follower of Karen O. Her solo music has appeared on numerous film soundtracks, including Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Where the Wild Things Are and Frankenweenie and she's reunited with Spike Jonze for Her - it stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls for a droid - the song just features Karen and an acoustic and if you close your eyes, you could be dreaming.

It was 1988, we were on our way to Bangkok from Jeddah, for a few days R and R. Both Shellhunter and Flycasual were being looked after by friends. Arriving in Bangkok, I bumped into a a guy, 'Ken the Limp', who I played football with. He suggested we share a cab and head for Pattaya as he was going to meet his 'wife' there.

Before you know it we were on our way to the Holiday resort of Pattaya. This started a long love affair with Thailand which still remains to this day.

We eventually found a hotel and the view from the hotel room was stunning (as you can almost see from the pic)

A Singha/Moet experience

That evening we hit town, we could not believe what was going on. There was Go Go shows, loud music, snake shows, Thai Boxing all happening for the price of a Singha Beer. It was exciting loud, brash and all the senses were going into overload.

The smell of sewers, mingled with the smell of garlic and coriander, beautiful!

The food of course was cheap and fabulous. The Thai people were friendly and always had a smile, even when they were ripping you off. You did not care, it was all worth it.

The clothes and suitcases were all cheap, so we were able to get plenty of the latest shorts and T-shirts for the kids and all the latest Louis Vuitton bags etc.

We had a fabulous time and many a sore head and it was over all too soon, but we planned to come back in the summer for 3 weeks.

When we got to the airport, the flight back to Jeddah was overbooked. I found out there was a flight out of Singapore later that day. I was luckily able to write my own tickets, so I hastily arranged a flight from Bangkok to Singapore to make the connection. We flew down by Lufthansa.

When we arrived at Singapore, disaster, the flight had filled up with workers from Indonesia. We were stuck in Singapore and the next flight out was not until Monday and it was full. It was Saturday evening and I was meant to be at work on Sunday.

Here we have a very interesting one. I was aware for some time that Elvis had covered Don't Think Twice, it's Alright. But it came as a surprise to me that there was a long Jam version as well, which is widely available.

The more I looked into it, the more of a mystery I found. Firstly there is no doubt that the session took place in Nashville, RCA Studio B, on the 16th May 1971. Where, along with other tracks, Elvis was recorded doing a long Jam version of Don't Think Twice.

It was first released in 1973 on the album Fool and was an edit of 2.42mins.

It again surfaced on the album Our Memories of Elvis Vol 2 in 1979. This was a long edit of 8.36 mins and had a Guitar intro.

There was a further 4 min edit released on the 1995 album Walk a Mile in My Shoes : The Essential 70's Masters. This also had the guitar intro which differed from the original 2.42mins release.

The plot thickens, when an apparently an unedited 9.18mins version of the Jam appeared on the FTD (Follow That Dream) release on the album Now (2010) which had many additional outtakes and various other versions of songs.

You might think that was the end of the story, but there was a further FTD release of the Fool album in 2012 and this contained a completely different Jam session of the song never heard before. To give you an idea of the impact of this version, I have quoted part of a review of the album.

What was your first job ??? Thinking back it seems a million years ago, it was in fact 25. I'd finished school in the June a very young 16 years old and didn't have a scooby what I wanted to do with myself. Throughout the last two years of seniors, I'd planned to do something with languages as I really enjoyed French & German but in order to get into College or 6th form I needed to get at least 4 GCSE grade C or better. Because of this I had set my goals on achieving this in just 4, those being English, Maths and the two languages. Unfortunately when my English teacher gave her prediction for me, she went for an E please Bob !!! Now I wasn't a bad student, and I never expected and E, but now looking back, calling her a 'stupid cow' wasn't my smartest move. As a result my plans to continue on with my education were scuppered, at the time it seemed great.... no more school !!!!

I remember this song being played around this time and I'm not embarrassed to say I loved it and a little part of me still does. At the time I didn't know it was 2 songs. I know that musical purists would have hated the idea of putting two great songs together but I ain't no purist.

As I said earlier I didn't know what I was going to do.
I saw an advert somewhere saying that the local Bejam was looking for part time staff so I went and applied. They gave me the job and initially it was for 2 hours on Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Thankfully they liked what they saw and soon I was working most days. It was great fun and we had some giggles. Food fights with the brussel sprouts and sausage rolls amongst others......the we would put them back in and seal the bag up and sell them at reduced prices !!! Not big and not clever but neither were we and the lucky folks of Feltham got to have cheaper food so it was a win win. As much as I enjoyed it, it didn't seem the career for me, even though my manager told me that I would go far.....I guess if I'd stayed I would have gone to Iceland so he was kind of right !!! Some schoolmates told me they had applied for jobs with Banks and so I thought 'hey I can count too' so I applied for all the big ones. I got interviews with 3 and was offered a job with one. I took it and stayed with them with plenty of good times and a bunch of not so good times.... But that's another story....
Oh and if you're still reading, I think my teacher was dyslexic cos I got a bloody B, but by the time I got my results I was earning £500 per month and decided to stay at the bank.... Regrets ??? I've had a few.

Dreadzone Ft Mick Jones - Too Late (2013)

I have followed Dreadzone ever since I heard the track 'Life, Love and Unity' from their album, Second Light (1995) and if you haven't heard that track, do it, it's a must hear!

This track, 'Too Late', I am glad to say, features none other than Mick Jones Ex The Clash and you can see him in all his glory in the video. It is a nice little sampler from their new album Escapades (2013) which is due to be released in a weeks time. Great to see them still rocking.

Belle And Sebastian - 'Your Covers Blown' (Miaoux Miaoux Remix) (2013)

At the time of writing I'm a very happy bunny, not just cos I'm on holiday in Montego Bay, Jamaica but cos I've been listening to a new Belle And Sebastian album (The Third Eye Centre). It's a collection of 19 rare tracks and b-sides, most of which I've heard and have somewhere but it's great to have them all together. The original version of this was on the CD single of 'Books' released in 2004 and it was probably my favourite song of that year. It seems to be a few different songs all put together to make for me a perfect pop song. When Shellhunter and I first saw them live in Hammersmith in 2006, this was my highlight. They've been busy touring the US & Canada and doing a bunch of European festivals this summer, hopefully they will do some gigs in the UK soon. If so, I'll be there with Belle's on.

Volcano Choir - Comrade (2013)

The collaboration of Collections Of Colonies Of Bees and Bon Iver are back experimenting with their second album, Repave and this is the second single. It has all the hallmarks of Bon Iver, yet slightly more experimental. I believe Justin Vernon is a genius. If you told me 10 years ago that one of my favourite artists would use tribal drums, Gregorian chanting and auto tune when creating his masterpieces, I'd tell you to go back to the madhouse.

Emiliana Torrini - 'Speed of Dark' (2013)

The humdrum of work is made a lot easier when I manage to hijack the office radio to BBC6 Music. So with one ear on Lauren Laverne's show last week, I hear this song come on and it's one of those that instantly grabs my attention, getting me up like a flustered meerkat who has heard a rather unusual noise. I'm seduced by the vocal hook and the sultry tone of Emiliana Torrini, reminding me a bit of Roisin Murphy and Little Dragon, two of my favourite female artists. 'Speed of Dark' is taken from the Icelandic songstress' fourth album, Tookah, out on Sept 9th.
